How Architecture Finds Its Place

How Architecture Finds Its Place

Beautiful homes belong to the land on which they reside. At this Palmetto Bluff residence, Court Atkins Group began not with the floor plan, but with the environment: expansive marsh stretching toward Daufuskie and Hilton Head Islands, tidal floodplains shifting with the seasons, and the borrowed green of a neighboring park just beyond the arrival court.

“The setting shapes everything,” says Preston Bussard, Senior Design Architect and Principal. “When the landscape is this extraordinary, your job as an architect is to honor it.”

That reverence is felt from the moment you arrive. A porte cochere leads to a private motor courtyard, offering both shelter and a sense of occasion before the home fully reveals itself. From there, the Lowcountry makes its presence known in the Savannah Gray brick and stucco, the standing-seam metal roof, and the mahogany entry door, warm against clean-lined facades.

Inside, the great room, kitchen, and dining areas open directly to marsh views. A screened porch extends the living space outward, and an infinity-edge pool dissolves the boundary between home and horizon. Guest suites, recreation spaces, and a primary suite anchor the plan for both quiet weekends and extended family gatherings.
