Home is definitely where the heart is, and more families are choosing to make it their favorite destination. New builds are showing an increase in amenities for entertaining like outdoor kitchens, unique pools and spas, bars and wine cellars, and remodelers are getting requests for these additions too. This trend points to the fact that inviting people over for supper clubs and family gatherings is at an all time high. Even home footprints are shifting to accommodate a larger flow of traffic than a normal size family needs.

One trend that really seems to be catching on is creating space for a wine room or small bar. The home bar originated among the social elite during the 1940’s in the form of a bar cart or small built-in cabinet. By the 60’s, many homes had a bar in their living room, but by the late 70’s and 80’s this idea had fallen from grace. Instead of a home bar, people started going to pubs, bars and, yes, even discos for a fun night out.

By the turn of the century the trend changed yet again. Smoking bans, safety concerns and more awareness on the dangers of overindulgence and drinking and driving had people making the decision to stay put for their nightcap. Today, homeowners are requesting everything from small wine closets to cellars and full fledge bars. Take a look at some of our favorites for your next inspiration.

GET CREATIVE A wine room or wet bar doesn’t have to take up a lot of space. A wall rack for wine bottles fits neatly into a “back kitchen” where glassware can also be stored. A built in cabinet along a wall becomes an instant bar and showpiece. Utilize all your space–like under the stairs–to create an interesting and unique wine cellar.
