Remodel For the Future

There are lots of home trends we might like to forget like pink tile, avocado-colored appliances, shag carpet walls and the combination of mauve and blue everything. Most notable trends can be clearly traced back to the decade in which they were popular. With this in mind, modern remodeling focuses more on updating a home while keeping an eye toward the future.

As homeowners become increasingly aware of the importance of having a good functioning home, they focus less on “cool” features and more on good design and workability. This is particularly true in the Screen Shot 2015-07-07 at 2.41.15 PMkitchen. Owners are realizing that a remodel should take into consideration their needs for the present and the future, and also be marketable should they decide to sell.

During the recent economic downturn, many homeowners opted to stay put and customize their existing homes with modern features and exquisite details. The trend seems to have stuck. In fact, now that the economy is picking up, many builders report that remodels aren’t necessarily decreasing in scope, but increasing in size. People are spending more money–albeit cautiously–and asking for grander remodels.

There are huge improvements in home building materials, like luxury vinyl, which is replacing ceramic flooring in kitchens, that save homeowners money and still look good. Energy-efficient products also save money in the long-run making remodeling a wise decision.

Kitchens and bathrooms come first mostly because of necessary updates, but homeowners are also trying to figure out ways to reconfigure their usable space. Kitchen extensions that take in formal dining rooms or open up to living rooms are popular. The addition of “keeping rooms” off the kitchen for kids to play and study in is another often requested feature.
