Make Hardscape Part of the Plan

When planning outdoor entertaining area or a garden, don’t forget to plan for the hardscape as well. Hardscape is the inorganic part of your yard that includes things like walkways, trellises, pergolas, fountains, and patios. By merging these “hard” objects with “soft” flora, you can create magical spaces perfect for entertaining and enjoying.

CHOICES This is the fun part. Choosing which hardscape elements to include may involve some research because there are so many available options. Do you want a lighted path that uses the same materials as your driveway? Or perhaps you want ornamental benches and a fountain to sit by and enjoy nature? If barbecuing is your family’s favorite outdoor activity, you might even think of creating a full-scale kitchen area. Dispersed among these options can be planters filled with colorful flowers, trellises covered with flowering vine, or rock gardens. An enjoyable outdoor area awaits you!

DESIGN Traditionally, hardscape was defined as objects made of masonry and wood, but as outdoor rooms become more popular, homeowners are experimenting with a variety of substrates like concrete, tile, brick pavers, or cobblestone and pebbles. It’s okay to be imaginative as long as you keep the design in proportion and your choices blend with the landscape. You can combine straight and organic styles, as well as a couple of different textures and colors. Hardscape adds structure to a yard and can help define spaces, but too much can become harsh, so make sure you include plenty of vegetation for a natural look. Seeking the help of a professional hardscape installer is also a good idea. They can help you visualize your finished yard in a way you may not be able to on your own.

TAKE SOME PRECAUTIONS Start any hardscape project with approval from your local Architectural Review Board (if applicable). Be aware that many hardscape projects require permits or assistance if digging is required. To avoid unnecessary headaches, consult with an architect, engineer or building professional to create a plan that will be built on a properly prepared base. There are lots of considerations with hardscape projects that a professional will help you realize like working around drainage, sprinkler systems, the sun’s patterns, and wiring for lights. Blocking a path of drainage with a new hardscape element can ruin an entire project and often it is not revealed until the hardscape is set and a good rain ensues. Be sure to enlist those who can help make your outdoor area the most enjoyable!
