Upscale Where It Counts

Custom door requests are on the rise as homeowners realize what a difference this feature makes

At trade shows, it’s normal to see exhibitors’ best products on display. Glamorous options and premium products are one way to lure passersby into a booth to learn about a company’s more realistic offerings. But recently, these higher end products have not just been showcased for dream home ideals. There is actually a growing increase in demand for premium products that exhibit quality details, and manufacturer’s have the orders to prove it.

Many economists view this move toward custom products as having something to do with the trend of global customization as a whole. In a world where consumers are just a few clicks away from designing custom t-shirts, cell phone covers, and floor mats, buyers have become accustomed to getting exactly what they want. Others feel the tendency toward high-end lines is a reaction to a recovering economy and homeowners finally having the confidence to spend again.

Regardless of the reasons, home product manufacturers have reason to be happy. While commodity-type products still, and always will, maintain a healthy portion of the market, the trend towards upscale is on the rise and becoming more common and more realistic.

The window and door industry has especially seen an increase in premium products. Manufacturers are adding new design features to their lines with enhancements to existing products. More than ever, homeowners are looking to make a first impression with unique doors that have sound structure. Doors create a tactile experience on a daily basis. Closing a solid wood door feels very different than closing a hollow door made of synthetic materials, and for owners who feel quality is key, this makes a difference.

Interior doors are also getting a new look as homeowners realize small upgrades can make a big impact. In a home with modest detail,  beautiful doors can add enough interest to make the spaces feel stylish and purposeful. Floor space doesn’t matter nearly as much as detail, so even small spaces can look fantastic with the right doors and windows. Upgraded doors can complete the design of any home whether it’s simple or an architectural masterpiece. With many styles to choose from and endless options for customization, doors have become another element of a room’s design as easily as a sofa or piece of furniture might.

If You Are Thinking of Upgrading

If new doors sound like a great way to pull your design together, start by investigating styles, materials and door parts. Most interior doors can be replaced as a DIY project if you get the fit right, but exterior doors can be a little trickier. Permits for certain access doors may be necessary to ensure fire rated hardware is used. Enlisting the services of a licensed contractor is never a bad idea and is usually price-reasonable for upgrading doors.

Doors can be simple and flush or can contain a variety of panels in different shapes, and even materials, that will compliment your home’s design. Door finishes and stains also can be used to create ambiance whether ultra modern, traditional, Tuscan, playful, or artistic. And, the possibilities of hardware are endless. Finishes and designs on knobs, handles and hinges complete the total picture.

If you are willing to take on the added expense, doors can even become elements of art in a room. French doors with stained glass insets, antique-style panel doors with gilded inlays, doors with arched door jambs, and re-purposed custom designed doors are just some ideas for making the space you walk through each day really awesome.
